Children's University

The Children's University (CU) Trust is managed through a network of over 100 local Children's Universities. At the heart of its work is the ambition to raise aspirations, boost achievement and foster a love of learning. It enables young people to make the most of their abilities and interests, regardless of the background into which they were born.

Leeds Children's University was launched as a pilot scheme in November 2014, involving five schools and over 400 children. Since then, more schools have joined. Our current members are:

  • Carr Manor Primary School
  • Dixons Marchbank Primary School
  • Guiseley Primary School
  • Holy Family Catholic Primary School
  • The Holy Family Catholic School, Keighley
  • Holy Rosary and St Anne's Catholic Primary School
  • Hovingham Primary School
  • Mount St Mary's Catholic High School
  • New Bewerley Community School
  • Our Lady and St Brendan's Catholic Primary School
  • Richmond Hill Primary School
  • Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School
  • St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School
  • St Philip's Catholic Nursery and Primary School
  • Wibsey Primary School

Children have been collecting stamps ever since. As well as events in their own schools, children have had the opportunity to participate in Super Saturday events at Leeds Children's University. In addition, 36 children were invited to meet James Milner at Leeds Trinity on the day he was announced as Leeds Children's University Chancellor.

How does it work?

Every child that becomes a member of Leeds Children's University receives their own Passport to Learning which they can use to collect stamps when they take part in activities in Learning Destinations. Certificates are awarded when a child reaches targets:
  • Bronze Award Certificate: 30 hours of Children's University Learning Activities
  • Silver Award Certificate: 65 hours of Children's University Learning Activities
  • Gold Award Certificate: 100 hours of Children's University Learning Activities

Certificates are normally presented at Awards events in schools. These are fantastic occasions for children, parents, carers and school staff. The pinnacle is our annual graduation ceremony held at Leeds Trinity when the children get to wear gowns and mortar boards.

Learning Destinations

Leeds Trinity University and partner schools are all official Learning Destinations. In addition, Leeds Children's University has validated 20 local organisations, ranging from museums and galleries to dance and drama groups, to become public Learning Destinations where children can take part in high-quality learning activities.
